Stack of books I read in June 2020

June was yet another slow reading month. I only managed to finish 3 books in June, but, again, quantity should not be the goal of reading. The times we’re living in are still very strange where anxiety is still very prevalent, so it’s only natural not to be on top of your reading goals.

2. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë – 1847

Wuthering Heights is the story of two families driven by love and hate. Cathy is a young woman torn between her husband and Heathcliff, the passionate and cruel man who grew up loving her.

To start with, Emily’s odd narration style throws the entire novel off balance. It is narrated by a housekeeper, who tells the story to a tenant 20 years after the events of the novel take place! It just felt like a failed attempt from the author to be experimental with her writing style.

Then, we have the characters, none of which are likable. They all feel like selfish, annoying teenagers having tantrums all the time. However, I thought the novel was very interesting and ahead of its time because I read Heathcliff’s character as a black character. Apparently, there has been some debate over Heathcliffs color, where most people in the past read him as a white character. But the reason I read him as black is that in the novel he is told that he is not “a regular black”; that was enough for me to read him as a black character. But I digress.

The plot is very depressing, there’s also a lot of cruelty and violence throughout. The novel felt very slow during most of it, but that uneventfulness happens in most Victorian novels.

I think it’s definitely worth a read, as it discusses a good number of ideas. However, I do feel it falls short of her sisters’ works like Jane Eyre and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
